Back Page Picture - “Carriers Crossing”

The latest thinking on Carriers Crossing is that is was built about 1939 by Ivor Hazzard of Great Durnford. The quantity surveyor for the job was John Cockle, sometime publican of the Wheatsheaf in Lower Woodford, it was John`s first job.

If, as is rumoured, the property was built for a Bishop of Salisbury it would have been for Bishop Neville Lovatt who was Bishop of Salisbury from 1936 until 1949. Neville Lovatt was a widower at the time of his Bishopric of Salisbury. If it was built for a daughter it might have been a Mrs. Moroney. At this time I have no knowledge if he had any more daughters. Mrs Moroney had a daughter, Bridgit who married a Mr. Clarke and is thought to be living in Devon - more information is being sought.

The name of the property is thought to be derived from the crossing of the river near where the property was originally proposed to have been built.
